Anna Renton appointed as new director of Penlee House

FOLLOWING a competitive selection process, Penzance Town Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Anna Renton as the new director of Penlee House Gallery and Museum.

Growing up near Redruth, Cornwall's museums inspired Anna to pursue a career in heritage. She moved away to study History at the University of Sheffield in 2001, returning to Cornwall in 2005.  Anna then worked at Cornwall Record Office as an Archive Assistant, before moving to London to study an MA in Museum Studies at University College London.  During this time, she also did a placement at the National Maritime Museum.

Anna's first job after graduating from UCL was working as the Collections Officer at the World Rugby Museum, Twickenham.  In 2009, Anna moved on to London Transport Museum where she worked as Curator and then Senior Curator.  Working with a range of objects from buses and trains to uniforms and tickets, Anna's specialism became the amazing poster and artwork collection.  While working there, Anna also gained her Associate Membership of the Museums Association (AMA).

Anna will be joining Penlee House after four-and-a-half years in charge of Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, where she headed up the team encompassing Collections, Learning, Visitor Experience, Library and Picture Library. During her time at the Museum, Anna and her team's achievements in developing the Learning programme included increased community participation; developing collections and exhibitions and consistently pleasing 90,000 annual visitors.

In 2017 Anna became a Trustee of the Roald Dahl Museum & Story Centre in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire - a museum housing Roald Dahl's original manuscripts.

One of Cornwall's most notable art galleries and museums, Penlee House is managed and funded by Penzance Town Council.  It is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School, including luminaries as Stanhope Forbes, Norman Garstin, Walter Langley and Lamorna Birch.  Penlee House specialises in showing the area's unique cultural heritage incorporating the historic collections of Penzance Town Council, Cornwall Council and Newlyn Art Gallery.

Anna will join Penlee House on 12th November and says: "I'm delighted to be returning to work in Cornwall and I can't wait to join the very talented team at Penlee House."

"We are confident Anna will do an excellent job leading the team at Penlee House and we look forward to working with her", says Penzance Town Clerk Hester Hunt. "Having developed a high level of expertise working in heritage institutions in the South East, it's wonderful that Anna will be bringing her knowledge and skills back to Cornwall."
